Did you know? Memento mori means "remember that you have to die" and is a Latin expression that originates from Ancient Rome. It was common practice for Roman generals returning home after being victorious in battle to parade in triumph through cheering crowds of citizens. To prevent the generals from falling victim to delusions of grandeur a slave stationed behind them would say "Respice post te. Hominem te memento"...."Look after you [to the time after your death] and remember you're [only] a man". It was then re-used during the medieval period and continues on to this day in art..."mementos mori" are symbolic reminders of mortality and in European Christian art the expression developed with the growth of Christianity, which emphasized Heaven, Hell, and salvation of the soul in the afterlife.
I love history and learning about the symbolism and meanings of words, phrases and traditions so I hope you are enjoying these little tidbits I keep throwing in for you ;0)

Love the wall art piece.
It would make a great greeting card.
thanks for sharing.
Fab images!
Two of my favorite stamps to play with the Large Skull Shrine and the oops I have the skull butterfly need to add the skull crown! Love the way this looks so ancient! And love the history behind the words...I am learning everyday! I will expect a gold star :) Awesome, Paula! xx
Thanks, Mary! I agree it would make a good card if the stamps were smaller--the colored part of this piece measures 8" x 5" and with a couple of inches of white space or border around it would be 10" x 7"...but if you have a big enough envelope, why not? :D
Right? I am so proud of all the cool images from LCD!
My concept behind the piece was that it should look like an old gravestone rubbing...glad you picked up on the "ancientness" feel, Nan! xo
I do love shrines. This one is awesome.
Thank you, Miss Viki! :)
A great Wall Art piece!
So glad you like, Val! Shall I frame and hang it, or is it too depressing? LOL
oh my I spy a journal stamp :)
Great piece of art. And thanks for the history lesson (always appreciated!).
Great wall art... I love black and white art.... did you have to remind me??? "remember that you have to die"
